The second series in Channel 4’s BAFTA winning series, The Jury, to be screened from 26 August reconstructs the murder trial of a young woman who killed her violent boyfriend.
In 2021 Centre for Women’s Justice (CWJ) published a comprehensive report exploring why there are so many miscarriages of justice which lead women to kill in circumstances where they were subject to coercive control and violence yet convicted of murder. CWJ are now supporting more than 30 women who have been convicted of murder in their quest for justice. The charity is launching a new campaign to highlight deep flaws in the law and criminal justice process which so often lead to unjust outcomes for women and they plan to contribute the Law Commission’s forthcoming consultation, which is reviewing the Law of Homicide.
CWJ CEO, solicitor Harriet Wistrich, has previously acted for several women who have killed their abusive partners at the Court of Appeal, including most recently Sally Challen and Fariessia Martin. She commented on the forthcoming programme:
“I hope this programme shines a light on these cases and demonstrates why it is so important that all those involved in a trial such as this are provided with the necessary tools and framework to understand the power dynamics of domestic abuse and the underlying structural inequalities between men and women.”
