Legal Advice Lawyer* (Maternity Cover)

Job Title: In-House Barrister or Solicitor
Department/Area: Legal Advice Team
Salary: £42k-£49k per annum
Reports to: Lead Enquiries & Policy Development Lawyer
Location: Hybrid working, (split between ‘work from home’ and office in Bethnal Green, London)
Contract details: 12 month Fixed Term Contract, 37.5 hours per week
Benefits: 25 days annual leave pro rata, plus bank holidays and three additional days off over the Christmas period; 5% employers pension contribution.

We have an exciting opportunity available for a feminist lawyer with a proven track record of advice and representation in actions against the police or criminal law. As a member of the legal advice team you will provide advice to survivors of sexual offences, domestic abuse and other violence against women and girls, predominantly via frontline women’s services, on issues relating to their experience of the criminal justice system and remedies for failings within the criminal justice system.

We would also consider applicants wishing to work 30hrs per week / 4 days a week.

Do you want to be at the forefront of national reforms improving access to justice for sexual violence survivors? 

Women and Girls Network (WGN) and Centre for Women’s Justice (CWJ) are seeking a motivated and experienced lawyer with feminist values who will lead on this ground-breaking work.

The successful applicant will work as part of WGN, supporting survivors of sexual violence to access high quality legal advice relating to their rights as survivors of sexual violence within the criminal justice system, challenging unjust decision-making and disproportionate data requests that violate privacy rights, and increasing the legal awareness of WGN team members by developing and delivering training.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in criminal law or civil cases against public authorities, with a strong understanding of the impact of sexual and domestic violence. They will be self-motivated, highly organised, and capable of communicating complex legal matters clearly to diverse audiences. The candidate will also have a commitment to feminist principles and the values of WGN and CWJ, along with a deep dedication to challenging discrimination and supporting those affected by violence against women and children.

Salary: £27,000 - £30,000 (per annum)

The successful applicant will work as part of WGN, supporting survivors of sexual violence to access high quality legal advice relating to their rights as survivors of sexual violence within the criminal justice system.  

WGN are seeking a motivated and empathetic Sexual Violence Paralegal to join their Sexual Violence Legal Team and support the delivery of the pioneering Sexual Violence Legal Pilot. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a dynamic, survivor-centred legal service committed to improving access to justice for those affected by sexual violence.

As a key member of the legal team, you will assist lawyers with casework, support client care, and ensure the smooth operation of the legal advice service. Your role will be integral to ensuring survivors receive high-quality, compassionate, and informed legal support.

*We deal directly with victims of sexual violence; therefore it is a genuine requirement that this is role is carried out by women only - Genuine Occupational Requirement (GOR), Schedule 9 (Work; Exceptions), Part 1 (Occupational Requirements), of the Equality Act (2010) applies.

Training Opportunities

Giving Legal Advice to Rape Victims

Format: Webinar
When: Wednesday 21 May from 13:00 until 14:00

Centre for Women’s Justice and Women and Girls Network are providing independent legal advice to rape survivors.

We are hosting a lunchtime webinar so people can learn more about what the role involves, and the types of legal issues engaged.

This will be useful for solicitors and barristers with experience of working in the criminal justice system in either criminal law or civil cases involving the police.  

Separately, the Government is aiming to launch a national service - this webinar will not address queries specifically relating to the national scheme.
