<image:caption>On International Women’s Day, 8 March 2020, the Centre for Women’s Justice, working with the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, submitted a super-complaint about police perpetrated domestic abuse (PPDA). At the time, little attention had been paid to this issue in the UK. Since then, and in the wake of several very high-profile cases, there has been increasing public concern about PPDA, violence against women and girls (VAWG) and misogyny within the police more generally. The purpose of our latest report is to look at the plethora of public statements and commitments,</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog, Press and News Updates - HOPE Campaign - JULIE SWEDE</image:title>
<image:caption>JULIE SWEDE I was just 15 when I started to be exploited in prostitution and trafficked across a number of cities in England I was badly beaten up by pimps and punters and arrested on the streets by the police. I became addicted to heroin aged 19 which helped me escape the horror I was living with. I eventually managed to come off heroin and get out of prostitution age 30. However, I continued to be held back and stigmatised as a result of my convictions for soliciting and loitering I have done a lot of volunteering In Bristol with projects supporting women in prostitution and drug and mental health charities. I have never managed to get paid employment partly because of being required to disclose my criminal convictions and the stigma associated with this. I have started campaigning against the exploitation of women in prostitution after I became involved in the litigation challenging criminalisation of women. I have recently decided to waive my right to anonymity to help the campaign by speaking out publicly. t: @WalsheSam</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog, Press and News Updates - HOPE Campaign - FIONA BROADFOOT</image:title>
<image:caption>At 15 I was groomed by a ‘boyfriend’ who became my pimp and made me sell sex on the streets. When I escaped my first pimp, I was picked up by another and continued to be pimped on the streets and in brothels. I suffered violence and abuse from my pimps and punters and I was regularly arrested by the police whilst they exchanged friendly greetings with my pimp. As a result of the police actions, by the age of 17, I had 39 convictions for soliciting and loitering. I eventually escaped prostitution aged 26 after I heard about the death of my cousin, Maureen Stepan, who had also been exploited in prostitution and was murdered by a punter. In the 1990s I met feminist activists and in 1996 I spoke of my experience in prostitution at the International conference to end violence against women. Since then I have campaigned to end the sex trade and the criminalisation of women in prostitution. I am a member of SPACE international, a survivor led organisation challenging the abuse and exploitation of women in prostitution. I am also the founder of Build a Girl, a survivor led social enterprise working with girls at risk of or experiencing sexual exploitation. t: @fiona_broadfoot</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog, Press and News Updates - Stop Criminalising Survivors - Women Who Kill: how the state criminalises women we might otherwise be burying, February 2021</image:title>
<image:caption>This report is the culmination of a four-year research study that explores the criminal justice response to women who kill abusive men. Through in-depth interviews with key criminal justice practitioners, and most crucially with women themselves, our research explores the extent to which the law itself, and the way it is applied, prevents women accessing justice.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Awards Archive - 2021 - Daisy</image:title>
<image:caption>Daisy has devoted the last nine years to an extraordinary one-woman campaign for justice against her birth father after she learnt that she had been conceived through the rape of her mother, who was only 13 at the time of the attack. Due to her campaign, and her repeated efforts to convince West Midlands Police to reinvestigate, her birth father was finally convicted of rape in July 2021. It is believed to be the first case in which the DNA of a person conceived in rape has been used to convict the perpetrator. Daisy is now leading a nationwide campaign for children conceived by rape to be recognised in law as secondary victims of the crime.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Awards Archive - 2020 - Sophie Campbell</image:title>
<image:caption>Sophie is the author of Breakfast at Bronzefield, a memoir about her time in prison. The book shines a light on discrimination against women in the Criminal Justice System. She has also written for a number of journals and other publications. Her writing challenges the stereotyping of criminalised women and shows how they are impacted by classism, sexism and racism. She makes a powerful case for treating women in prison as individuals and allowing them to speak for themselves.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Awards Archive - 2020 - Emily Hunt</image:title>
<image:caption>Emily won a hard-fought battle to have the Crown Prosecution Service take seriously the abuse that she had been subjected to. In 2015 the CPS decided to take no further action in relation to an allegation of rape that Emily had brought to them. Eventually, they made her aware that the suspect in the case had taken a video clip of her naked and unconscious. The CPS said that there was nothing illegal in him filming her in this way and Emily was forced to bring a Judicial Review of their decision in order to have the law on voyeurism clarified. Although her campaigning has come at a personal cost it has not only clarified that this form of abuse is against the law, but stands as an example to the CPS that they cannot continue to dismiss women survivors unchallenged.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Awards Archive - 2020 - Freya</image:title>
<image:caption>For years, Freya has used her own experiences to campaign on the issue of police failures to properly hold their own officers to account for domestic abuse. As well as raising awareness through social media, she has worked with the Bureau of Investigative Journalism and the Centre for Women’s Justice to draw attention to how perpetrators of abuse are protected by police forces. The rise in the profile of this problem, and the soon-expected changes to police policy and procedure on this front are a testament to the impact of her work.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sammy is an author, public speaker, campaigner, and consultant. In 2013 she gave evidence to The Times that proved that she had been abused and failed by the authorities. The resulting article named the man that abused her as the deputy leader of Rotheram council. This triggered the Alexis Jay report, which uncovered the abuse of 1,400 children in Rotherham. The largest police investigation in the UK followed, leading to a large number of perpetrators being convicted and held accountable for their abuse. Sammy campaigns against children being criminalised for crimes that they were groomed or coerced into, as well as being involved in a number of other campaigns around education, counselling services, sex venue licensing laws, and criminal injuries compensation for survivors of sexual violence. Sammy has published a book about her experiences.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Jean rides her bike for each of the women murdered by men as a result of intimate partner or family violence. She began the project in 2017 by riding for all the women murdered in 2016 and in 2018 completed 183 rides and ridden almost 5000 miles. She keeps the names of the women in the memory of the public by highlighting the details of how they died and indicating the male perpetrator tactics that were used. So it is partly to honour the women and celebrate their life and partly to raise awareness of the dynamics of intimate partner abuse.</image:caption>

KWAN delivers basic paralegal and rights advice to rural women and girls and uses the information from these community activists to advocate with local, national and international justice service-providers and legislators for a more effective response to violence against women and girls. Sheila campaigned in her local community in Wigan to make sure that everyone is aware of the risks associated with male domestic violence against women. She used her own experience to gain coverage in the local press, radio and national magazines. As an “ordinary” member of the community, Sheila has used different methods to those used by the wider domestic abuse sector, and in this way has reached people who are often not reached by the work of other organisations and individuals. <image:caption>In March 2009, Ann Moulds waived her anonymity and spoke out publicly about her terrible experience of being the victim of a long and horrendous stalking campaign. For over two and a half years, a sadistic sexual predator waged a campaign of terror on her life and everything she had worked hard for was slowly destroyed. In order to gain a sense of safety, Ann was forced to relocate over 80 miles away. In doing so, she lost her business, her home, her friends and her family. Her case was classed as one of the worst recorded in Scottish History. On 31 March 2009, Ann launched Action Scotland Against Stalking and spearheaded a media campaign to raise awareness of stalking to the general public and criminal justice agencies involved, to inform of the serious impact stalking has on its victims and to campaign for legislative change to recognise stalking as a crime in Scotland. Her efforts paid off and on 13 December 2010, stalking became a criminal offence in Scotland.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Since 1996, when she was 19, Finn Mackay has actively campaigned and worked against violence against women and girls, in her own time, as a student and as part of her paid work. She successfully revived the annual national Reclaim The Night marches and rallies in London, building participation from 30 women to over 2000 today. As a youth worker, she supported and advised abused young women, and created re-housing policy for them. Her innovative work for Islington Education, writing schools’ and teacher training materials against domestic violence, won her a GLA award. A co-founder of the Feminist Coalition against Prostitution, she has gained national media coverage and considerable support on this issue. Finn has voluntarily spoken, campaigned and contributed to national policy on all these issues.</image:caption>

She has raised the profile of all the causes she takes up, through writing and speaking, inspired others to action, and worked tirelessly, not just for women as a whole, but also individual women. Sandra McNeill was a founder member of Justice for Women and is still an active member after 19 years. For example, she has spent weekends visiting imprisoned women accused of murdering their violent male partners. Established in 2003 in response to an ever-accelerating sexist culture of objectification, OBJECT works to create a vision of a society free of sexism, in which women are represented in their full diversity. <image:caption>Mothers of Sexually Abused Children (MOSAC) are a support organisation for non-abusing parents. The parents of children who have experienced sexual violence often feel that they are to blame, feel ashamed, and believe they should have realised what was happening. Whilst there is support available to children and young people who have experienced sexual violence, little attention is paid to the needs of their parents. Two women in this position bonded together to create support, and created MOSAC 12 years ago. Since then they have supported over 600 women and their children through counselling, confidence building, and evening classes, and run a support service for young women who have been abused, in conjunction with a local domestic violence group. They have also trained women who have used the service to become volunteers and support other women. Despite taking numerous referrals from statutory services, few, if any, give funding for the service MOSAC is providing. The group are largely unfunded, raising money through fundraising, small events and donations.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Awards Archive - 2005 - Pauline Campbell</image:title>
<image:caption>Following the death in prison of her daughter Sarah from ingesting prescription antidepressant tablets, the day after arriving at HMP Styal – the third in a sequence of six deaths at Styal within 12 months – Pauline started a campaign to highlight the distressing reality of women’s lives and deaths in prison. Pauline, with no funds, no family support, and bearing the grief of the loss of her only child, organises demonstrations outside prisons whenever a woman dies, has been arrested many times, and has worked tirelessly to bring the scandal of the deaths of vulnerable women prisoners to the attention of the public and government. It was with great sadness that we heard about the death on May 15, 2007 of Pauline Campbell, winner of the 2005 Emma Humphreys Memorial Prize. This is what the person who nominated her for the award had to say about her: In January 2003, Pauline’s daughter Sarah died after ingesting sleeping tablets, the day after arriving at HMP Styal. It was the third in a sequence of six deaths at Styal in the twelve months ending August 2003. Sarah was Pauline’s only daughter. Pauline has no partner or parents, and not much income (she is a retired college lecturer). Despite that, her efforts to highlight the distressing reality of women’s lives and deaths in prison have been indefatigable. Whenever a woman dies in prison, Pauline goes with a small number of people to demonstrate at the prison, usually, but not always, an all women group. So far, she’s done that 15 times. The women lay flowers and hold signs saying ‘Why?’ When a prison van arrives, Pauline stands in front of it alone, happy to take responsibility and the flak. She is regularly arrested — at least nine times so far — and has spent hours in custody, despite not having had a criminal record before beginning her campaign. Two court cases against her, brought by the Crown Prosecution Service, have been quietly dropped. In 1997, one woman killed herself in prison. In 2004, there were 13. The death toll of vulnerable women prisoners is a scandal. Pauline is one of the leading voices trying to bring it to light, with no funds, no family support, and bearing the grief of the loss of her only child. So far, her activism has certainly contributed to the then Prisons Minister Paul Goggins’ decision to launch investigations into the deaths at Styal, and she has been instrumental in keeping the issue in the media as much as she can. Pauline Campbell is selfless and tireless, and her incredibly important work deserves recognition.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Samantha was subject to child sexual exploitation from the age of 12. The vast majority of her abusers went unpunished, and Samantha has spent more than a decade trying to establish why. Using data protection laws and official complaints processes to unearth evidence, she pieced together how she was failed by those employed to protect her. Despite both Greater Manchester Police and the IOPC upholding many of Samantha's complaints, no fresh charges have been brought against the suspects still at large and no officer has faced a misconduct charge. This prompted Samantha to call for an independent inquiry into child sexual exploitation in Oldham and the Government has subsequently announced the town will be subject to a local inquiry with statutory powers. Her hope is that exposing past failings will lead to greater scrutiny - improving outcomes for current victims of child sexual exploitation. Samantha has also written about her experiences in the book ‘Undefeated’.</image:caption>

<image:caption>‘Sam’ is a passionate and articulate advocate for people with lived experience of modern slavery and women who have experienced violence and rape. She campaigned tirelessly to ensure that her rapist and exploiter was brought to justice, advocating not only for herself but for a wider group of women, not only in leading her legal case and providing peer support, but also in bravely sharing her experience in a documentary: Catching my Rapist. Sam advocates for the importance of survivor voice in telling their story and achieving justice, her work within her case, and to create and publicise her documentary, demonstrates her tenacity, and encapsulates the importance of survivor voice.</image:caption>

Her case was abruptly dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service just before trial due to a rare sleep disorder defence; her story was highlighted in the BBC Three documentary ‘Sexsomnia: Case Closed?’, which followed her battle for justice. Jade now speaks out about her case’s flaws and their repercussions, striving to improve the system for other survivors of rape and sexual assault. She is a founding member of the Met Police Victim Voice Forum and participates in discussions and training with the Metropolitan Police and CPS. Furthermore, she shares her insights as a guest speaker and panellist at events in the justice, charity, and education sectors.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In addition to the various significant campaigns against VAWG that Jill has either initiated or been actively involved with, of which the most recent was setting up the Tees Valley Sexual Violence Forum, she is also a feminist academic and writer of huge importance to the moment, having published, among other titles, Femicide (with Diana Russell), and the Lesbian Custody Project (about the systematic attack on lesbian parenting). It is singularly fitting that Jill is the first recipient of this award as she worked with Jalna over the years, as we are indebted to both of these remarkable women for the grit and determination they have both brought to the fight against VAWG and the difference they have made.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Megan was a victim of serious violence and coercive control from her then partner. After he was convicted of murdering another man, and despite evidence of her experience of abuse, Megan was prosecuted for perverting the course of justice for allegedly helping him to evade capture. At her trial, there was a hung jury; the CPS insisted on a re-trial in which she was ultimately acquitted. Megan fought her case tirelessly and has used this terrible experience to raise awareness and support the Centre for Women’s Justice’s work to press for reforms in law and practice to end the unjust criminalisation of victims of domestic abuse.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Awards Archive - 2022 - Amber</image:title>
<image:caption>Amber is an adult survivor of child sexual exploitation and horrific abuse by grooming gangs in Rochdale. After almost a decade seeking to hold Greater Manchester Police to account for their failings – alongside two other brave survivors who brought claims alongside her – Amber secured a landmark legal settlement in April this year from the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police. In an unusual televised address, the Chief Constable personally apologised to Amber and the general public for GMP’s treatment of her and other child victims. Having secured this victory, Amber is still hoping to persuade the Crown Prosecution Service to change its practices, or to support a change in the law, so that CSE victims like her can never again be criminalised or added to a criminal indictment in circumstances where they have been groomed by adult men. (Amber is entitled to anonymity as a victim of serious sexual offences, and Amber is the name by which she prefers to be known in any publicity about her case)</image:caption>
